Atriarch Watcher...We're watching. Are you?

Atriarch Community Profiles: Scrudge

Introduction

1) Who are you?
Scrudge, a refugee from Asheron's Call who accidentally wandered into Atriarch-land and has been here ever since. I'm an artist and since I've been obsessing over this game, there are Atriarch sketches all over my house now. After sending several species drawings to Herok at CoA I became the regular artist of the Atriarch Farside and am impatiently waiting WF's Unarra update so that I can finish my species series and start using them in the comic too. I'm also an active member of the Dharuba Mkondo.

2) How long have you followed the development of Atriarch?
Since last November (2000)

3) What game(s) did you play before finding out about Atriarch?
I've played the Dungeon's & Dragons type role playing PnPs for years. As far as computer games goes, Baldur's gate, Diablo, and a whole bunch of others which I got bored and/or frustrated with and quit after only playing for a month or so. In MMORPGs I've been playing AC for the last year or so...although I've been getting really tired of all the hack n' slash, so I'm almost ready to cancel my account.

Gaming Aspects

1) What gaming design aspect are you glad is included in the game?
There are so many things (alien world, persistent characters, no visible stats, emphasis isn't on killing everything that moves, enormous world size, etc.) it is hard to pick just one aspect that I like most. I suppose the thing that got me interested in Atriarch in the first place was the idea that players could create their own buildings and have them remain in the game world, but now that I think about it, it is more than just that. By letting us create our own structures we will be making player run towns and cities, and along with those comes player created governments and societies. I guess it all starts with the making our own buildings, so that is what I'm glad is in the game.

2) What would you like included in/removed from the game?
I can't really think of anything that WF should put in that they haven't already thought of.

As far as things that should be removed...if there was a magic wand that they could use to make Atriarch griefer-proof I would like that. The only thing I'm afraid of is after waiting all this time for the game to come out, I get killed by a k3wL d00d looking for l3wT.

3) How much/what innovation do you think Atriarch brings to the industry?
I think that Atriarch will be unlike any other MMORPG out there, not just because of the setting, but because of the power that it is giving to their players. We will be altering the world of Atriana in strange and wonderful ways, I think it is a brave thing that WF is letting us do...setting us loose on their world not knowing what sort of things we will come up with.

Atriarch Community

1) What factors build/destroy the Atriarch community?
Encouraging an active, imaginative, and creative community is the most important thing. The people that I have met in IRC or on the boards all seem to be genuinely interested in Atriarch and making sure that it is the best game around. By having contests, events, and other things that help increase community participation and interest, the community will continue to grow and thrive.

2) How can the schism between longtime and new followers of the game be breached?
One of the greatest things about the Atriarch community is that they always seem to welcome new followers so easily. I know that many times on the boards there are some fascinating ideas that are brought up by new members of the community, things that some longtimers may have never thought of. I have never really noticed that there is any sort of schism between longtime and new followers, we all have something of value to bring to the discussions.

3) Should visibility in the community curry special favour in the (pre-)game?
I think it should. It shows that these people have a commitment to the game and are concerned about how it turns out. Besides, I'd love to get into beta...just think of all the comics I could do based on the things that go on while trying to work the bugs out ;)

Discussions

1) Where can people find your threads (site/url)?
I'm pretty active on ATS's boards, as well as CoA's, and the Dharuba Mkondo's.

2) What thread was your favourite to start or see thrive (site/url)?
There are a lot of really great threads out there, but I think my favorite (for now at least) has been the debate going on in ATS's dev board about why food should or shouldn't be required in the game.

I also like the ages thread at ATV, and at ATS and the introductions ...mainly because I'm always curious about the what other people are like that I'm debating with.

3) What do you think should be discussed more amongst the communities?
Everything!! There isn't any one topic that is more important than the others. I suppose just being active and coming up with new ideas on how we can improve the game is what really matters.

Other aspects you think would interest folks?
Just read the FAQs and find out everything that you can about Atriarch. Visit the sites and talk to a few of the community members. Once you do that you'll be as addicted to this game as I am :)
