Atriarch Watcher...We're watching. Are you?

Captured by Herok in ATS's #atriarch (irc.stratics.net) channel on June 22, 2001

New Playable Species
{Serafina} You are all going to hate me soon
{Jahmbo} never
{Serafina} uh... well, we'll see
{Serafina} I have decided that I would like to put a type of human in Atriarch.
{Jahmbo} thats cool
{Herok} you mean unarra?
{Nguvu} Kinda necessary, based on all the feedback
{Nguvu} She means a humanoid
{Serafina} no, not the Unarra... another bioengineered species that looks like a human
{Herok} are they playable, or just slave-workers?
{Serafina} playable species, not slaves
{Serafina} the thing is that most people will start off human, but then they'll play with the other species afterwards

Origins
{Serafina} The truth is that we've had humans in our mind from the moment we started the game. We knew all aliens was a bit risky, so just in case we had to change it, we would be ready.
{Serafina} What I really would like help on is the story. How would you like to see the humans come to be on Atriana? ... not Earthlings, but Atrianese Humans
{Herok} i remember the first devdiary mentioned humans
{trewit} there were humans in that early dev drawing series
{Serafina} yes, there were... originally, Atriarch was 100% human
{Cephas} I think that the humans wouldn't be that bad an idea
{Serafina} then we went 100% alien
{Serafina} hehe... now we are 80% alien 20% human :-)

Storyline
{Serafina} Nguvu... the "humans" would be another race in addition to the Unarra and the others
{Jahmbo} how about a bioengineered species that was created for a specific task? like reconnaisance, nake them have chromatophoric skin so they can camoflage themselves in any environment? but they broke free of their masters and evolved their own culture.
{Herok} I agree that they need a specific task set to explain their re-emergence
{Serafina} That's a very cool idea Jahmbo
{Herok} Serafina, are you asking for input on the story just for the species, or how they interact with the other natural species?
{Serafina} Herok... all the above
{Jahmbo} what would be neat is if the seeds of this humanoid were ashipwrecked interplanetary species
{Jahmbo} whose technology was lost to the ages
{Herok} yeah Jahmbo
{ph|Eyeke} we already got magic, might as well have humans eh?
{Herok} its a good device
{Jahmbo} would open up the plot line to lots of future development
{Jahmbo} could introduce stuff just bam, without tons of dev time
{Nguvu} This is taking place at the same time as when on Earth?
{Jahmbo} like chemical weapons :P
{Jahmbo} k thx machine guns
{Nguvu} You should specify that, but make it in the future, so its possible to do stuff as Jahmbo mentioned
{Serafina} yes Nguvu.. it is supposed to be current day
{Nguvu} (specifying the date on earth would give a frame of reference to many players, imo)
{Nguvu} Oh, hm.. well, secret nasa launches
{Jahmbo} are you deleting a species to make room for the new one or adding it in addition to them?
{Serafina} no
{ph|Eyeke} humans suck
{Serafina} well, they aren't real Earthling humans Eyeke
{Nguvu} Hm.. you kinda neat a short race, Serafina
{Serafina} Nguvu... yes, humans would be short
{Jahmbo} hmm, maybe the atrianans recovered the fallen voyager satellite from their planet, saw the bronze plaque with the rendering of the human and bio-engineered one from scratch?
{Serafina} Jahmbo... that is a good idea
{Jahmbo} its a little star-trekkish, but i like it :P
{Serafina} yes, it is a little star-trekkish
{Herok} I'd like humans to not be the "base" race like the DnD worlds
{Jahmbo} well, theres the shipwreck, the bio-engineered, how about this-they were dropped off, clones, fresh from stasis with no memories as an experiment from another world, to see how they would adapt to a hostile environment as a precursor to colonization?
{Serafina} awesome ideas Jahmbo.. you should get laid off more often... we could use ideas like yours around here :-)
{Jahmbo} dont make them refugees from earth with all our history and crap
{Nguvu} Wasn't that earth-human?
{Nguvu} Or are you talking about humans that are from earth, but don't know their history?
{trewit} eww, I certainly would not want to play a human in Atriana, I can do that anywhere?
{Serafina} no Jahmbo... I doubt they will be refugees... too Planet of the Apes for me
{Serafina} trewit... I agree with you
{Jahmbo} refugees not from earth, or whatever and the only survivors were from the med-bays, clones that have no memories, and therefore no spacetravel technology to whine about
{Serafina} everyone will realize that the other races are much cooler, but to get people to try out the game at first, I think we need to have humans

The Look
{ph|Eyeke} you're going to make kendoll humans? with no unit?
{Serafina} I guess that depends... maybe they picked up some Baywatch episodes and that's what they based humans on
{Serafina} Jahmbo asked a good question. This is not something that was forced on by publishers or investors. This is actually a design decision.
{Serafina} well, that would allow us to make the Unarra less humanoid
{Jahmbo} it will attract people that might stay away becaus3e of their reluctance to play a totally alien species
{Nguvu} Not just another alien, but some evolution from Adam and Eve, you might say...
{ph|Eyeke} can we be black?
{Serafina} that depends on the story... which is what I would like to ask you
{Nguvu} Well, the game culture actually recognizes that these are 'humans' or 'human-like' .. not just 'Unarra'

Asexual
{Cephas} now are they going to be asexual humans?
{Serafina} Cephas... hehe... yes, most likely
{Cephas} actually.. if you're going to have humans... why not give them male or female?
{Serafina} there will be male and female
{Serafina} remember, if the storyline is that the species picked up a trasmission of some sort and based human engineering on that, then there would be male and female looking versions whether or not they actually physically reproduced

Cavolon Experiment?
{Serafina} they wouldn't be Earthling Humans, but Atrianese Humans bioengineered on Atriana
{ph|Eyeke} engineered by whom Serafina?
{Cephas} humans = cavolon experiments gone wrong

Thread, Participate!
{Serafina} I am going to start a thread on the boards to get the story idea going.
{Serafina} well, there will be some people who hate me for this, I am sure
{Serafina} Nguvu... well, it is stay all alien and play with only 10k people or add humans and play with 100k people :-)

Design
{Osweld} Doesn't having humans defeat the whole purpose of Atriarch? it wouldn't be alien world anymore
{Serafina} Osweld... I know... hate me for the decision
