Eshlar Weapons
{Dyant} How will the Eshlar fare in combat? Will they be a (hopefully) more defensive species?
{WF_Serafina} The Eshlar are strong, powerful and slooooooooooow
{WF_Serafina} They are like trying to move a brick wall.
{WF_Serafina} Their focus is on defense.
{Dyant} So, is it easy to evade Eshlar that are attempting to attack?
{WF_Serafina} Dyant... yes. However, if you are in the way of there blow, you are going to get hit really hard.
{Dyant} Will their tools come into play with combat at any time?
{WF_Serafina} Dyant... a hammer can be a weapon or a tool, so yes
{Dyant} Err.
{Dyant} I mean any tools specifically designed for combat?

{WF_Serafina} The Eshlar weapons tend to be large and heavy, like sledge hammers

{WF_Serafina} You wouldn't see an Eshlar holding a fencing weapon.. that would be weird

Khanja Combat
{King_of_Dreams|DM} Is a Lokai using etahs Khanja as a weapon acceptable? Or would that be a social no no?

{WF_Serafina} King_of_Dreams|DM... that is really a question for Satyric who couldn't make it. The way we have it right now, you can use it as a weapon. The Khanja has many uses... sorta like a Swiss ARmy knife

{WF_Serafina} It can hold a mapping gem. It can be used in staff fighting. It can be used as a walking stick.
{WF_Serafina} no... not a decoration... not much in Atriarch is a decoration... mostly functional

Lightning Range
{Regeta00} How far could the Tyrusin's ability to shoot out lightning advance in training? Can we create (with enough water and skill) a huge lightning bolt that knocks both you (since it takes all the water out of you) and the enemy out? Sortof like a 1 on 1 last resort. How powerful will the ice shields and lightning bolts be?
{WF_Arc} Serafina can answer the Tyrusin question better than I.
{WF_Serafina} yes, if you are out of energy and use it all up, then you will immobilize yourself
{WF_Serafina} at least until you regenerate more energy
{WF_Arc} Kind of a final strike idea.

{WF_Serafina} The power on all the moves are constantly being changed to check for balancing issues

Height and Weight Factors
{Korak} WorldFusion has went on record(hehe) saying that the physics engine(Volcano Engine *cough*) will be very realistic, and detailed. Now, on to my question... Will height/weight play a role in Atriarch? If so, how? If not, why not?
{WF_Serafina} I'm gonna leave the physics questions up to our physics guru... Arc
{WF_Arc} Yes, both height and weight factor into combat.
{WF_Arc} Your reach and area of attack are determined by your body size and reach.
{Korak} in relation to height, are projectile attacks more effective at higher elevations?
{WF_Serafina} And your "Attack Zone" is also defined by your size.
{WF_Arc} Everything in the world has mass, and mass is always used for physics calculations...
{Korak} ahh, sounds like an improvement over past MMORPGs
{WF_Arc} ...including speed, energy, power, etc.

{Korak} what about sharpness of a blade?

{WF_Arc} Yes, sharpness matters for certain types of damage against certain materials.

{WF_Arc} We take material properties into account as well, not just some amorphous armor value.
Amputees
{Regeta00} Will we be able to incapacitate anyone? If i strike their arm hard enough with a sword will it fall off or strike their neck will the head pop off?
{WF_Serafina} hehe... I don't think Arc types as fast as us IRC addicts *grin*
{WF_Serafina} Regeta00... somehow I expected that question.
{WF_Arc} Yes we will have amputations and decapitations, although the latter probably more rarely given the toughness of the characters.
{WF_Arc} That is characters rarely, native creatures more often.
{WF_Serafina} and since we are an organic world, it will grow back... not necessarily the head, but a limb
{Regeta00} Yeah like the lokai's arms after spawning =)
Sword Clash
{Regeta00} Also will swords clash if both hit the same time or will they go through each other like EQ?
{WF_Arc} We aren't currently providing collision down to the body part and item held when fighting, so no, not yet.
{WF_Serafina} What is more likely to happen is that you will damage a limb and it will become incapacitated instead of cut off
{WF_Arc} However, our engine is set up for it. It is a matter of CPU overhead and development time.

Incindiary tactics
{Zang} will there be flamable or incidiary liquids or materials usefull for combat?
{WF_Serafina} There will not be mass destructive explosives.
{WF_Serafina} so, you will not be able to for example, blow up an entire town
{Zang} will there be flaming arrows?
{WF_Serafina} However, there will be flammable weapons
{WF_Arc} Chemicals will come into play for personable combat.
{WF_Serafina} yes, including for example our version of a flaming arrow
{Zang} could they ignite things?
{WF_Serafina} Zang... don't know about that one yet. It is on the feature list, but one of those features listed at the end.

Military Ecosphere
{Korak} Will combat be effected(affected ha!) by geography, topography, transportation, and communication? If so, how? Does Atriana bolster military ecospheres?
{WF_Arc} Combat is affected by the physical conditions of the location of the fight.
{Korak} I did a little homework, if you need more info, please ask.
{WF_Arc} I am not sure what you mean by the rest.
{Korak} The importance of geographic and topographic factors, along with limited means of communication and transportation, meant that separate geographic regions tended to develop unique military technologies. Such areas are called military ecospheres.
{Korak} The boundaries of a military ecosphere might be physical barriers, such as oceans or mountain ranges; they might also be changes in the military topography, that combination of terrain, vegetation, and man-made features that could render a particular technology or tactic effective or ineffective.
{Korak} This is more of a history Q...in relation to combat...

Single Handed Capture

{WF_Arc} Wouldn't be worth much though, if it didn't have any defenses.

{WF_Serafina} HellsChicken... we emphasize getting a good Eshlar to build you some defenses :-)

{WF_Arc} A good thing to keep in mind for player built towns: air defenses, good.

Stealth Combat
{TheGoodReverend} What types of stealth are available for combat? Are there any forms of invisibility? Can you train yourself to blend with your surroundings? Can you acquire objects to do this (like a ghille suit)?
{WF_Serafina} Right now we do not have that implemented.

Tunnels
{Toren|DM} Will we be able to literally undermine a town, invading it via a secret tunnel a mile away in the forest?
{WF_Serafina} as far as Characters are concerned... we have some suprises up our sleeves in that arena :-)

{WF_Serafina} What Arc is saying is that in some areas you can hit a place on the ground for a week and get a chip... definitely not worth it

{WF_Arc} How many times in history do you know of cities being captured by tunneling marauders?
{WF_Arc} It's a lot easier to go over ground, than under it.

Non-Violent Combat Contributions
{taraturg} How much a role will non-violent characters, who are specialized in non-combat fields, contribute to battles?
{WF_Serafina} uh...quick answer to that...
{WF_Serafina} crafts and trades are important to almost every endeavour in the world
{WF_Arc} Much, violence is not the center of Atriarch.
{WF_Serafina} well... other than chatting and exploring
{WF_Serafina} trades are important and integral to Atriarch
{WF_Serafina} We haven't released information about it because we are saving it ;-)
{WF_Serafina} Some things are better left as a suprise
{taraturg} On the battlefield, will these characters be able to contribute in any way?

Indirect Combat
{Toren|DM} How will indirect combat be dealt with, such as pushing a boulder down a hill into a building that knocks the building down, curhsing and killing a poor lokai trapped inside, will the proper punishments/rewards be able to go to the atrian who pushed the boulder, will this be player based, such as the family sueing the building company for not making the building stronger, and putting the person in jail, or server-based with a karma-hit?
{WF_Arc} Basically you are talking about a chain of events.

{WF_Arc} From the boulder crashing we backtrack the event to how the boulder got moved, so yes.

Mass Chemical Weapons
{Nguvu} What possible strategic weapons exist (e.g. Zang's chemical warfare, what about biological warfare?)?
{WF_Serafina} Biological warfare? For example, poisoning a food supply?

{WF_Serafina} I don't see the difference between chemical and biological warfare.
{Nguvu} Okay, and that is yet to be implemented? But you said it was not on a massive / strategic scale? Just personal combat?
{WF_Serafina} you are talking about germs? viruses? disease?
{Nguvu} Yes, or chemicals.

{WF_Arc} Toxins will be present. Biological agents will be present.

{WF_Arc} These will most likely be Cavolon specialities.

{Nguvu} Like, the poisoning of a water supply which multiple persons drink from.
{WF_Serafina} Nguvu... it is possible, but we may limit the impact of such weapons

{WF_Arc} It's only limited by what is physically possible.
{WF_Serafina} if you were to poison a water supply, unlike in the real world, you would be able to see it in ATriana

Sniper Mode
{Nguvu} Three questions: Will sniper weapons / weapons that have a zoom feature be available? How 'invisible' will damaging traps be? Will 'tactical' (small area, not massive) exploding weapons exist?

{WF_Arc} Since we are not emphasized projectiles, offhand I would say no to sniper zoom weapons.

{WF_Serafina} As far as traps are concerned... traps are not specifically designed in. They don't need to be. Whatever the physics allows for can be designed.

{WF_Arc} Yes, however there are limits to how sophiticated it can get.

Hit Zones
{Korak} From reading the new faq, and specifically the new combat information on hit-zones, how will changing from one body part(hit-zone) to the next happen? Multi-person battles... How will targeting one opponent(and body part), then targeting another work? Can I attack multiple targets at once?
{Korak} And sorry if these Q's are long-winded, i'm getting jacked in #atriarch for these novellas 8)
{WF_Arc} There are two modes of attack, targeted and untargeted.
{WF_Arc} In targeted combat you simply pick a different target.
{WF_Arc} In untargeted combat mode, all your attacks are directed into the space in front (or behind if that is the maneuver).
{WF_Serafina} The other mode is you just attack in a direction and hit whatever stands in your way
{WF_Arc} If you hit something, you do damage (possibly), otherwise you miss.

{Korak} Can I attack multiple targets at once?
{WF_Arc} Skills definitely matters, but combat is still very physical.

Special Attacks

Air to Ground
{HellsChicken} will air to ground combat be possible? For instance someone riding a Guard, and throwing down rocks, shooting arrows down at a villiage? How about air to air combat?
{WF_Arc} Yes, yes, and yes.

{HellsChicken} so would folks on the ground have an easy time defending themselves?
{WF_Arc} Again we don't discriminate.
{WF_Serafina} all you have to do is move out of the way

{WF_Arc} That would depend on how they are protected.
{WF_Serafina} assuming it is just an arrow or rock being dropped
{WF_Arc} Most towns will have anti-air defenses.
{WF_Serafina} ...big plants that lob out anti-air missiles
{WF_Arc} Either their own flying warriors, or AA guns of a kind.

Anti-Air Defense
{King_of_Dreams|DM} How discriminating will anti-air be? If I were a civilian travelling by some sort of lighter than air craft, would I have to worry about getting shot down when entering a city?
{WF_Arc} Only if you are recognized (or assumed) hostile, I would think King_of_Dreams.
{WF_Arc} Same as if you approach on foot.
{King_of_Dreams|DM} So basically you get shot down if you shoot first? Or someone on the ground decides they don't like you?
{King_of_Dreams|DM} Ok, was wondering if those in the air had to be especially carefull.

{WF_Arc} No, not especially, it is just another form of travel.
{WF_Serafina} unless of course you cross hostile territory

{WF_Arc} Just vunerable to gravity.
{King_of_Dreams|DM} Or will it be just as dangerous on the ground as in the air?

{WF_Arc} That is, the damage caused by suddenly embracing the ground.
{WF_Serafina} You have more degrees of freedom.

Long Range Weapons
{Nguvu} Ah, okay. And what about really long range weapons? Will they exist?
{WF_Arc} If you can lob something far enough, Nguvu, then it will work.
Large Weapon Parts
{Zang} This is sort of a follow up to Nguvu's question:will large weapons like catapults be able to just be build to be functional from parts..without specifically telling the ganme that it is a catapult?
{WF_Arc} Again, if the mechanics are simple enough, they will just work.
{Zang} will gears work?
{Zang} and pulleys?
{WF_Arc} We haven't done catapults yet, but it seems likely at this point.
{WF_Arc} Levers yes, pulleys and gears, maybe, maybe not.
{WF_Serafina} gears are more likely than pulleys
{Zang} ah, depending on time?
{WF_Arc} Gears more likely than pulleys, ropes are hard to simulate effectively.

{Korak} Greek fire was a liquid that ignited on contact with seawater. It was viscous and burned fiercely, even in water. Sand and-according to legend-urine were the only effective means of extinguishing the flames. Now, is there any type of Greek fire planned for Atriarch? Does my skill in peeing matter? Can I improve on force and arc?
{WF_Serafina} uh... no, your skill in peeing does not matter
{WF_Serafina} however, you can improve your strength a bit which will improve how far you can throw things
{WF_Serafina} and being a girl... i just got that joke *sigh*

Long Range Creatures
{Toren|DM} could a long-range catapult be put onto a large platform attached to large creatures and move around launching rocks at cities?
{WF_Arc} Sure, if you can manage it.
{Toren|DM} or could a creature also be a weapon and move itself around if trained
{WF_Serafina} Toren|DM... yes, we actually have a creature that carries towns on its back
{WF_Arc} Keep in mind, anything you do is limited by the physics involved.
{WF_Arc} If you can muster the forces and power necessary to do it, you can do it.
{Toren|DM} ahh what about the AA guns
{WF_Serafina} Mythfit designed the city-carrying creature
{Toren|DM} could they be mobile?
{WF_Serafina} yes
{WF_Arc} Getting massive, powerful creatures to follow you wont be an easy task though.
{Toren|DM} ok and one last related question, instead of having a huge creature, could you have a platform on ropes or beams spread across multiple creatures backs
{WF_Arc} Sure, though coordinating the movements of a lot of smaller creatures is probably much harder than one big one.
{WF_Serafina} like Arc said before... ropes are not something we will probably support right awawy
{Toren|DM} ahh thank you, will make my life easier knowing i can have moving platforms without having a giant mile high slug
{WF_Arc} We will have attachments though. Just the flexibility of ropes and lines is questionable.
{Toren|DM} so in the beginning of the game, we might have to use say, wooden beams for this sort of thing
{WF_Arc} A rope has to be very flexible to operate a pulley effectively, but no so flexible to tow something.
{WF_Serafina} We can't put *every* feature into the game... some have to be saved for upgrades.
{Toren|DM} do we have to wait?

{WF_Serafina} We have done a lot and still have a lot to do. Currently, we do not have the death system in.
{WF_Serafina} Nor do we have any repercussions for attacking another player. That is still to be tested.
{WF_Serafina} The milestones we are working on right now are graphics.
{WF_Serafina} For example... woo Arc! We now have awesome looking fire in Atriarch!
{WF_Serafina} We also just recently put in a brand new nighttime sky with stars.
{WF_Serafina} The stars actually orbit the planet and are accurate.
{WF_Serafina} That means you can actually navigate according to them.
{WF_Serafina} The sun revolves around the planet
{WF_Serafina} so when it is day on one side it is night on the other
{WF_Serafina} The position of the sun moves according to the seasons too

The new expansion of diablo2 implements a system where you charge up moves for a final attack adding damage and effects as you go.. what kinda system is your "console style fighting" ? the 9 on the numpad is strong left attack, 8 key is strong kick, 9 key is strong right attack, 1 key is weak left attack, 4 key is mid-strength left attack ??
{WF_Serafina} Soffo... the keypad actually directly relates to a location
{WF_Serafina} Soffo... for example, upper left key means an upper left attack
{WF_Serafina} therefore, it is easy... not thinking necessary... 1 for 1 relation

{WF_Serafina} Phinehas.. .defense is automatic. You can choose your style of defense, but not each move
{Soffo} or some mob is weak in the lower middle area.. say they have only one foot
